eBay has made its first steps towards becoming involved with the open source world with the launch of a dedicated website and the release, in beta, of Tumeric, a service-oriented architecture platform used internally by the site. It’s the first big project the company has released as open source, but it will not be the last.
eBayOpenSource.org’s mission is to open source some of the best of breed technologies that were developed originally within eBay Inc, for the benefit of the community, under a liberal open source license. These projects are generic technology projects and several years of development effort has gone into them to mature them. The first project that is being open sourced is code named, Turmeric. Turmeric is a comprehensive SOA development platform using which services can be developed, deployed, managed and monitored in a scalable fashion. Since this is the first release of an existing code base refactored to match the open source friendly package names etc, you may encounter some rough edges and if you do, please log appropriate issues by clicking on the “Issues” tab above. Community is free to take advantage of these projects. Users are also encouraged to contribute ideas and enhancement as appropriate for the benefit of the overall community.
